13xx Race St Firehouse Gargoyles

gargoyle
Very soon, the building that this gargoyle protects will be no longer. The expansion of the PA Convention Center will take in the building (erected 1925) at 13xx Race St. I took a walk by the place at the end of October so I could see the gargoyles for the first and last time. The photos are up here.

I hope these will be carefully removed and preserved somewhere like the Fireman's Hall Museum in Old City.

I've been too sad about the upcoming demolition to go take photos of the gargoyles etc. But I'm glad you did!

I'm really glad they are planning to preserve them. Strangely, for such a historic city, Philly is often rather lax about building preservation…the firehouse itself being an example.
