Ferrara's Canolis

ferrara, nyc

Ferrara Cafe in NYC's Little Italy.

BEST CANOLIS ON THE PLANET

On the way back from Connecticut two weekends ago, Lady and I stopped off in NYC for a few hours to walk the streets of SoHo and Little Italy a bit before heading back to Philly.

I've had canolis in a lot of different places. None have come close to the canolis at Ferrara's. They're absolutely the best. Every time I go there, an incredible canoli.

City Paper 25

armory crowd

On Thursday night I went, for work, to the City Paper's 25th anniversary party at the Armory building on 23rd St just south of Market St. It was a huuuuge party. The interior space was all done up as a Philly cityscape complete with a double decker sightseeing bus [where the DJ was perched], a Ride the Ducks car/boat [god I hate obnoxious tourists], a taxi, a converted trolley, some PhillyCarShare cars, four bars, several restaurants giving out free food and a gigantic trapeze!

models and phillycarshare car

There were models dressed up as, I have no idea. What's that girl in front supposed to be? A brick wall with caution tape? I'm not sure what the artist was going for there. Weird. There was also a fashion show with models on boxes rocking outfits by local designers incorporating actual old City Papers. Some were cooler than others. I didn't catch the name of the designer who won at the end of the night.

trapeze

There were three acts up on the trapeze. It was pretty cool and crazy at the same time. The trapezists [is that a word?] would sprawl down 30' down the fabric to oohs and aahs.

At one point, the emcee announced that all the liquor had been consumed. I can believe that, there were tons of people drinking the free alcohol. Oooh, the food was free too. It was a free for all in there. I didn't want to stand in the lines so I just grabbed a couple cans of soda throughout the night.

I saw Mayoral non-candidate Tom Knox there obnoxiously wearing his red button. Later on, I brushed by actual candidate Michael Nutter who was talking it up with a bunch of people throughout the night. He was not wearing an obnoxious button at a non-political event.

club risque men

And there were also some male dancers/models walking around too. These two grabbed me to have their picture taken. They were two of the many dancers from Club Risqué upstairs [I think that's where they were from]. They were one of the final acts on stage for the night.

It's funny walking around a big event like this with a big camera. People just grabbing me asking to have their photo taken with no idea where the photos will appear in the future. Funny funny.

Congratulations to Paul Lang

paul lang

My sincerest congratulations to a person I am proud to call a friend of mine Paul Lang who ran in PA-06 in Bucks County for State Senate against incumbent Tommy Tomlinson.

Paul received 41,896 votes which, unfortunately, was 46.5% to Tomlinson's 48,146/53.5%. But Paul did this on his own on his own terms without the help of big time PA Dems the Hoagiemeister Ed Rendell and Philly kingmaker Sen. Vince Fumo. They stayed out of the race to curry political favor in case the powerful longtime incumbent Tomlinson won.

I got emails from him with updates and voicemails in between events during his busy schedule. He was always upbeat even when bad news came down the pipe relating to Harrisburg. He had to have been tired with such a crazy schedule, but I knew he was pounding the pavement day in and day out mashing hands with a smile on his face. At 29, just a few years my senior, he's a role model and a person I know will stay involved in this nasty political game one way or another; he wants to do good.

I know that there are tons of people just like Paul all around the country. People who ran for the first time for one reason or another. People who have been involved in politics for years and some newbies. These are the people, our peers, who will be the decision makers of tomorrow. Some of them were fortunate and won, others lost, but an initial loss cannot mean the end. I remain optimistic because of people like Paul and the others around the country like Paul whom I know must exist.

Now to scrounge up a few bucks and get his ass downtown so I can buy his ass a beer, he's earned it.

gReader Mobile

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

After reading over at Brian's blog about how Google Reader has a mobile version, I quickly tried it out on my Motorola Q hoping that the browser would work well with the application. It does. Like a charm.

Pages load up quickly and it's a perfectly stripped down functional version of the full web application. I love it. I can now catch up on reading on the trolley and wherever I have a few minutes to spare and my phone handy in my pocket. Bitchin.

Moldy Pumpkin

moldy pumpkin

I didn't have the time to post this photo I took of the pumpkin I carved for Halloween which once looked like this. The above photo is from Halloween evening, one week after the initial carving.

After a week of warm weather followed by rain followed by freezing cold and howling wind (which knocked the pumpkin off of it's table outside), it looked like this. With a big crack running down its face and a dried up mouth splitting open the thinned crust of the pumpkin. Looked pretty gnarly to me.

Dean: Booyeah

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

I can't believe my eyes. The plus column all lit up for both houses of Congress and Governor's mansions (where much of the tone of each state is set). It actually happened. Without a coherent message. With two dickheads at the helm of the DSCC and the DCCC. With the head of the Democratic National Committee and the head of the DCCC not speaking to each other for several months leading up to the final stretch of fundraising. With John Kerry being, well, John Kerry a few days before people went to the polls. Somehow. It happened.

I immediately thought of articles of impeachment for both the President and the Veep (you can't leave that fucker in as the successor). But before the Senate was decided, 800 year old Donny Rumsfeld resigns. I nearly fell out of my seat as I saw the 30-point headline across the New York Times' website. I don't know jack shit about Rummy's successor but Larry Johnson, former CIA agent, does and so does my friend BooMan and now, I know a little bit.

Back to impeaching those criminals.

So I'm watching The Daily Show and I Jon says that Howard Dean would be on (via satellite) and I was excited. As Dean comes on, they joke a bit about Dean's improbable 50 state strategy as it was in its infancy. Then Jon rolls into thoughts of impeachment. Dean responds: We will not move to impeach the President. I was surprised he went out and said that. I didn't think that the Dems would be ballsy enough to go ahead with it, but a flat out no? Not even a political, "We're not officially in power yet until January" or something. N-O. No.

He did end on more of a high note though. While on The Daily Show's 'Seat of Heat' he did give us a new soundbite: "Booyeah" was the sound he'd use to describe the jubilation on the Democratic side of the aisle. Oh what I would've given for a "Yeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!"

The nation stood up against Bush in a referendum vote, not really one of local concerns. Will the Senators and Congressmen and Congresswomen -elect stand up for them?

my vote

What I saw this evening around 8.30p or so on MSNBC.

Paraphrased…

DNC Chair Howard Dean: The genius of Chuck Schumer in finding a candidate like Bob Casey isn't that he's pro life, but that he's a great person and a great foil to Rick Santorum.

Hardball host Chris Matthews: What about his stances as a pro-life person? What about his positions on partial birth abortion. His potential votes on appointed judges. The laws his father passed in the state. What if he wants to bring those views to the floor of the senate?

Dean: Look, he has a variety of positions on various issues.

* * * * *

Lovely.

Dean went on to say how he would personally invite Sen. Bob Casey to speak at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Ricky's out. Great. He's going to go become a bajillionaire now. Now Casey's in "representing" me. Fuck.

I'm thrilled that Joe Sestak is the projected winner in his race.

Philadelphia Mural Photos

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

Steve works for the Mural Arts Program and has taken it upon himself to collect about a dozen photos of various murals around town. So go through your archives and read this post for the details on how to submit.

The photos must be high enough resolution to be printed nicely at 12" x 18" and you will be compensated for your work.

I just sent him a selection.
