Dean: Booyeah

I can't believe my eyes. The plus column all lit up for both houses of Congress and Governor's mansions (where much of the tone of each state is set). It actually happened. Without a coherent message. With two dickheads at the helm of the DSCC and the DCCC. With the head of the Democratic National Committee and the head of the DCCC not speaking to each other for several months leading up to the final stretch of fundraising. With John Kerry being, well, John Kerry a few days before people went to the polls. Somehow. It happened.

I immediately thought of articles of impeachment for both the President and the Veep (you can't leave that fucker in as the successor). But before the Senate was decided, 800 year old Donny Rumsfeld resigns. I nearly fell out of my seat as I saw the 30-point headline across the New York Times' website. I don't know jack shit about Rummy's successor but Larry Johnson, former CIA agent, does and so does my friend BooMan and now, I know a little bit.

Back to impeaching those criminals.

So I'm watching The Daily Show and I Jon says that Howard Dean would be on (via satellite) and I was excited. As Dean comes on, they joke a bit about Dean's improbable 50 state strategy as it was in its infancy. Then Jon rolls into thoughts of impeachment. Dean responds: We will not move to impeach the President. I was surprised he went out and said that. I didn't think that the Dems would be ballsy enough to go ahead with it, but a flat out no? Not even a political, "We're not officially in power yet until January" or something. N-O. No.

He did end on more of a high note though. While on The Daily Show's 'Seat of Heat' he did give us a new soundbite: "Booyeah" was the sound he'd use to describe the jubilation on the Democratic side of the aisle. Oh what I would've given for a "Yeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!"

The nation stood up against Bush in a referendum vote, not really one of local concerns. Will the Senators and Congressmen and Congresswomen -elect stand up for them?

Take a moment, and help convince Nancy Pelosi to Impeach..

The day the nation demands impeachment is upon us. Sacks and sacks of mail are about to arrive in Nancy Pelosi's office initiating impeachment via the House of Representative's own rules. This legal document is as binding as if a State or if the House itself passed the impeachment resolution (H.R. 635).

There's a little known and rarely used clause of the "Jefferson Manual" in the rules for the House of Representatives which sets forth the various ways in which a president can be impeached. Only the House Judiciary Committee puts together the Articles of Impeachment, but before that happens, someone has to initiate the process.

That's where we come in. In addition to a House Resolution (635), or the State-by-State method, one of the ways to get impeachment going is for individual citizens like you and me to submit a memorial. ImpeachforPeace.org has created a new memorial based on one which was successful in impeaching a federal official in the past. You can find it on their website as a PDF.

You can initiate the impeachment process and simultaneously help to convince Pelosi to follow through with the process. Do-It-Yourself by downloading the memorial, filling in the relevant information in the blanks (your name, state, etc.), and sending it in. Be a part of history.

The idea of not impeaching is a little disappointing, but note that no one said they wouldn't launch any investigations and censure hasn't been taken off the table.

While I think it's important to hold Republicans and Bush responsible for the shitfest they made out of everything, I also think it's important not to tie up the Congress, either.

I think it's possible to investigate and hold people accountable, bring the truth to light without impeachment that will still be very satisfying in the end.

well, we've clearly been ruled by criminals with no respect for the Constitution. but when I think of the first 50 things I'd like to see gotten underway, vengeance doesn't even make it on there — things like minimum wage, healthcare, better safeguards for Constitutional rights, taking global warming seriously, protecting reproductive rights, blah blah, are urgent, will make a difference in people's lives, and will be a full-time job for quite some time. impeachment would bring all of that to a halt.

if *I* feel that way, as a flaming liberal and general fist-raiser against power, how do you think the rest of the country feels? impeachment proceedings are unlikely to succeed (especially with the Senate so closely split) and could well give away the '08 elections, as those more centrist than myself reconsider their '06 election decision to give the Democrats a chance at running things. we need to focus on our real long-term agenda, make the American public glad they gave us the majority, take care of the future of our nation. I'm glad to hear that Dean (and probably the other leadership) recognizes that, even as I share your twinge of disappointment that my more visceral urges won't be satisfied…

I think it's too early to be very disappointed about the lack of talk concerning impeachment, and I'm glad to see not everyone is focusing on it.

That said, it isn't necessarily off the table is it? I mean, they do have to investigate prior to the actual impeachment (something nobody's had much chance to do under the current one-party domination), so it follows that no final determination on whether or not they impeach can be made until at least an investigation happens.
