Animal Heads

That's the first booth at Ludwig's Garten [Sansom/13th]. Lady and I stopped in for some grub there before heading to the Bastille Day celebration in Fairmount. We were going to have lunch at Pastoral, but our lunch plans were foiled as the place was pseudo locked up. Arg.
We sat down before Lady noticed the gigantic mounted deer head which kinda freaked her out. Above my head was a black bear head which was not as freaky. I finally had a chance to try their wurst platter. Oh man is that good. Along with some nice 'kraut and chunky potato salad and nice and spicy mustard, it was great. Lady had a gigantic salad which I helped finish up.
It's a nice place to duck into for lunch with just enough afternoon drinkers to not feel empty, but you still feel like you have some nice company.

Not a fan of the heads either but still like Ludwigs quite a bit. They have a nice beer selection as well (and as used to offer a set of 7 ounce "samplers" – that was a lot of fun)

In the late 90's when they first opened, the restaurant section was exclusively restaurant (no bar in there). The decor was slightly classier and the food was MUCH better. I was there a couple weeks ago for the first time since 1999 or so and was very disappointed. It used to be a real restaurant, now it's just a german version of applebees with a good beer list.
Their 'brewed only for Ludwigs' Victory Mad King Weiss was pretty good though.

I hate deer. I mean, in concept, I like 'em just fine. It's just hard not to develop a pathological hatred for the species when they're as thickly populated as they are here (north of Baltimore). Kill 'em all, I say, and let Bambi sort 'em out.
