Turning Down Money
I turned down an ad for this bloggity blog for the second time yesterday. The first one I turned down was a few months ago during the primary season here in PA. An ad was submitted through Blogads and it was for a candidate I didn't like and don't identify with in the least. This time around it was for a cause I feel strongly about, net neutrality.
I believe the internet should remain how it is and should not become one that is tiered. I don't feel right about taking their money while believing in the exact opposite and exposing more people to their stupid tricks to try to seem like the big telecoms are all going to shrivel up and die if the internet remains "neutral" - those fuckers are doing just fine. Creating a stupid flash animation geared at trying to trick people into thinking on their own while implanting what they want you to think is something I dislike. If you're going to show me an ad, show me a god damn ad, don't be coy about it.
There have been some great posts from the Philly area on the topic of net neutrality below are a few samples pulled from a query using Philly Future's wonderful search tool.
Among many, many others.Anyways. Net neutrality is a good thing in my opinion and I don't want any of their stinking money. Anyone want a Wawa strawberry shake ;) - I've probably been to Wawa under ten times in my two years here in Philly. How I managed to do that, I have no idea. I've never had one of their shakes either, they any good? If I wanted a good shake, I'd get my ass over to Franklin Fountain or Little Pete's.

Can you let me know exactly how these ads generate money for you and please reply directly within this post? I am young (in blogger years) and would have thought the end product would have had to be a purchase, but I can't fathom you can order a wawa shake thru email (nor would I want one)

The ads aren't a per-click thing or anything. They're ads submitted through Blogads which can target a specific group of blogs or individual ones. I presume advertisers take a look at the traffic numbers, keyword searches, general content and other things of the blog before purchasing an ad. So there's nothing one could really do to help me generate money for me. I'm not looking to make a killing off of this thing though, just happy to offset some costs and have beer money along the way.
I have no idea how the advertiser even quantifies [is that the right word?] the ad buy after they've bought it. I worked in ad sales for a year at PW and never 'got it' and I still don't and that's why I sucked at it.
I don't think this single ad Wawa ad highlighting their strawberry shakes will make a dent in their large scale sales, but by buying ads throughout several Philly blogs, I gues they're trying to brand themselves a bit.
