IKEA Aspelund Bed Frame

bed before
It took about an hour and a half to go from the above, just opened box to below:

bed after
With the wooden slats in place.

IKEA's Aspelund bed frame.

The only problem is that, Lady forgot to take into account the box spring. Bed frames are [usually?] constructed to not need a box spring. But the box spring makes the whole bed set more comfortable. And we don't have room for a full size box spring either. So, for now, we're sleeping with the slats + box spring + mattress. Some Princess and the Pea action.

I'm really good at putting together that junky furniture. Many people [hint hint] are not so good at it. I've put together so much IKEA junk since college in 1998, I can't start to count the pieces now.

***Just to clarify, our experience with this bed has been just peachy since putting it together.

***It is now May 2, 2008 and we're still enjoying this bed. I've taken it apart and put it back together while moving from one place to the next with no problems.

  1. Tulin Says:

The wooden slats in IKEA beds are crap. I have one, and the slats continually fall off the frame and create giant holes that the mattress sinks into. Good luck!

  2. KT Says:

I think the purpose of the slats is so that you don't need a box spring - at least that's what they told me. My Ikea bed (with slats all still together and no box spring) is comfortably about to turn four.

  3. Lasermom Says:

In the "olden days", all beds were slat beds, and the springs were really metal springs (not in a box.) They had a lower profile than a box spring, and mattresses were thinner too, so both springs and mattress fit on the slats with most of the headboard showing.

The best part was when the slats shook loose in the middle of the night and crashed to the floor, leaving the bed at a crazy angle and forcing the occupant to get up and crawl around the floor replacing slats.

When are you guys going to start shopping at a real furniture store :-)

  4. Lucy Says:

TULIN - I'm so glad to read about someone with the same problem as me.

I bought the Aspelund a couple of months ago and have had LOADS of problems.

Primarily, the slats continually fall through the frame. I'm going to attempt to return the bed tomorrow. Wish me luck!

  5. Heather Says:

I am currently sleeping in my living room after buying a collapsing Aspelund. My problem is that the metal sidings that came with it were incorrectly drilled so there were no holes for the little retainer plugs that keep the slats in place - and so are all the replacement ones they have sent me so far! So I guess there has been a bad batch of wrongly drilled sides. My advice is do not buy this bed unless you plan to sleep very still right in the centre, like a mummy.

  6. Suzy Says:

Maybe Swedes never have sex? Our Queen size Aspelund bed is a disaster and my hubby and I are senior citizens! Heather is right. If one person slept exactly in the middle of the bed and didn't move it might stay in one piece. Today we bought plywood to fit tightly inside the bed frame. I hope this improves our sleep and our romance.

  7. Amy Says:

My mattress salesperson said no boxspring necessary, but use solid plywood rather than slats. You can get them cut to fit the bed and they won't fall off like slats.

  8. Susan Says:

I just came on this website to find out how to put together an Aspelund bed. I was hoping to find positive feedback. Has ANYONE had a good experience they can tell me about?

  9. Neil Says:

No, the IKEA Aspelund is a really crappy design.

  10. Chris Says:

My girlfriend had the same problem with her IKEA bed. It was a real pain in the ass to fix it whenever the mattress fell past the slats, and it happened at the most inconvenient times.

I stopped the slats from falling through by affixing them to the frame rails using screws. Has been a month since trying this idea and it still works flawlessly.

The poor bed frame I had experience fixing was not Aspelund. Yet, I encountered the same problems as the others.

But, it can be fixed with a few dollars worth of screws, and a drill if these resources are at hand. The plywood idea was also being taken into consideration, but the screws were cheaper

    GOOD LUCK

  11. Irene Says:

i bought this bed for my parents on Monday - twicw the slats have fallen through the frame ! As my parents are over 80 years old, this i sreally not amusing. I am going to Ikea to complain tomorrow !

  12. zoe Says:

i was planning on buying the full size aspelund. in the past i have had a metal frame ikea bed with slats (discontinued). i have also had the malm bed with slats. the metal frame was very comfortable, but the malm was horrible with the same mattress. however, slats never fell through on either and im wondering if the aspelund is any different or if you guys are all just having bad luck.
HAS ANYONE HAD BETTER EXPEIERIENCES WITH OTHER IKEA SLAT BEDS??
CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF I USE A BOXSPRING AND MATTRESS (NON PILLOWTOP) HOW MUCH OF THE HEADBOARD IS LEFOVER?
    THANKS!

  13. slatmaster Says:

I finally fixed my Aspelund bed! No more collapsing slats!!!

The problem was with the metal X-shaped frame underneath. IKEA's instructions showing how to attach it are WRONG! The four ends of the "X" should NOT be attached to the corners of the bed; instead, they should be attached to the holes near the middle of each side. This slideshow includes a picture (different bed, but same idea):

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/blakeformayor/57900071/in/set-1253224/

Re-attaching the X-frame near the middle does two things. First, it keeps the sides from bulging out and letting the slats fall through. Second, it frees up the holes near the corner of the bed so that you can attach the retainer plugs that Heather mentioned. The plugs hold the slats in place and keep them from sliding. (I, too, originally thought my bedframe was missing the holes for the plugs, but it turns out the plugs are actually supposed to go in the holes where IKEA wrongly tells you to attach the X-frame!)

To summarize: if your X-frame is attached to the corners, that's probably why your slats are collapsing. And here's the easy fix:
    - Take apart the metal X-frame
    - Reattach it to the holes near the center of the sides
    - Put in the plugs (eight total) to hold the slats in place.

Let me know if you have any questions. I hope this is helpful!

  14. Patrick Says:

will this bed work with a box spring and mattress?

    anyone have any pictures

  15. Hannah Says:

Patrick my hubby and I are trying it with the box spring and mattress at the end of the month, I'll let you know if it's a good idea or bad. Lol, I hope its good!

  16. aspelundhater Says:

My queen size Aspelund has been collapsing from month three on. The slats will just fall. Some of them broke and the staples have gone missing from the tops. Sex is not an option (unless you make it collapse right away, and do it on the middle of the bed, which limits the possibilities). If anyone's interested, I'll sell this bed to you, slats and all. It'll make a romantic fire if you have a fireplace.

  17. Kate Says:

Hey there, i have this exact problem & have contacted Ikea & they say they have no other notes of this problem with this bed! Liars! They said to take it back for a refund or exchange. Slatmaster please could you tell me on the x-frame, you have 8 bits that make up 4 frames, which hole do you put the two together to make it reach from the middle to the end? I've tried but i think it made it worse & actuallty push the end of the bed outwards! Its SO ANNOYING

  18. Elli Says:

It may sound silly but another cheap remedy, which appears to be working. Is fixing the slats with duct tap! We were being woken frequently in the middle of the night, to find ourselves almost lying on the floor - as yet again the slats had slipped. We put duct tap along the middle to stick the two rows of slats, and at the edges, sticking each slat to the outside frame. Maybe not the best long term solution but it's working!

  19. Christie Says:

I bought one of these full size beds from IKEA and have not had any problems, YET (knock on wood). But after seeing all these bad reviews I'm going to try and take all the precautions I need to, to assure that i don't fall through! But I do have a box spring and a pillow top, there's a little over a foot of head board left over after this. I use the slats from a previous bed I'd bought from IKEA and I think the box spring is helping the bed from falling through. it fits on the ledges of where the slats are too. If anyone knows of directions online for putting this bed together, please let me know. The only problem I'm having is getting the top-decor-park on the headboard and base board.

  20. Sheryl Says:

i bought my light-weight 10 year old daughter a Malm single bed, and the slats keep falling through. Ikea have said that they have never had this problem - right!!!
i have also noticed that there are drilled holes in the metal ledges which i don't use. can anyone shed any light on those?? i don't have an x-frame like the other models referred to, but i will be trying some of the quick fixes above

  21. Dan Says:

I used to have one of these, I loved it because it was easy to break down and move, but hated it because it was easy to break. I must have fallen through about 5 times with that thing :)
I ended up redrilling the holes in the X frame to tighten it up a bit, it seemed to help, but really, it shouldn't have happened in the first place.
I remember some drilled holes in the sides that used to hold small plastic "plugs" to minimize the slat movement…maybe they deleted them in the newer models???

  22. CJ Says:

Just thought I would throw this out there. We have been having a problem with the slatts falling through as well. I did a bit of research and realized that I have the slatts in incorrectly. I had them in so that they curved downward, but according to IKEA they are supposes to be curved upwards. See the picture here
    http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30072830
Hope this helps someone, sure did help us.

  23. Jen Says:

What if you use the box spring plus mattress combo because you WANT the height? Are the slats necessary then? It seems like with that much support they would not tend to slip or break. Has anyone tried the plywood idea? I thought that was clever too.
PLEASE let me know, I'm on the verge of buying one of these (because I want the height and underbed storage)

  24. Khoa Says:

    Hi!

I search on internet about assembling the slat, size queen. I bought 1 malm queen bed frame, and a set of slat with a mid beam made of steel. I can easily put the bed frame together but still Im being struggle with slat. I can put the mid beam in, but the pieces of wood wont stay still. they kept moving and irritated me. Can you advice me of how to keep them stay still? Thank a lot!

  25. UJ Says:

I have this bed and seem to have gotten over the falling slats issue by tightening that X frame.

I have a new issue with the bed. I'm missing one of the wooden pegs that holds the side to the headboard. And in general, after having used this bed in 3 apts (and therefore putting it together 3 times…) the screws holding it to the headboard are loose. So loose that one whole side fell on me this weekend.

HOW DO I FIX IT????? Someone help! I really can't buy a new bed right now.

My latest idea involves nailing the headboard to the side. Except that headboard is SOLID! I even tried drilling a new hole in it — it was rather hard.

    Any suggestions???

  26. Leti Says:

I've had a Malm queen bed for 3 years and have had no problems whatsoever other than the fact that installing the cross pieces is always a pain. I've even disassembled it and reassembled it when I moved. I will say, however, that I purchased a mattress from Ikea at the same time that I purchased the frame, and I returned it within the first year. Worst mattress ever. I think it was the Hasselback–I found it mushy.
My boyfriend has the Aspelund and it seems much more flimsy than my Malm. It broke shortly after we began dating. He doesn't use slats because he has a box spring, so he hasn't had the problem many of you have complained about, but he wasn't using the midbeam (he didn't realize he was supposed to pick that up when he was collecting the pieces of his bed at the store). So, without the midbeam, we managed to tear one corner of the inner metal frame right out of the "wood." Shortly thereafter, the rest of the side pulled out, too. In the end, we got a midbeam, and he simple reattached the thing using the upper set of holes, but man is that thing a piece of crap!

  27. Maria Says:

I just bought the Malm bed, will put it together tomorrow. I wanted to use a box spring instead of the slats but I also bought the occassional table as well. So I am worried that if I get a box spring and mattress that therer won't be enough room for the table to slide back and forth across the bed.

The slats sound like they are horrible. So any suggesstions? Any advice would be appreciated.

  28. Amanda Says:

Our Aspelund Queen sized bed is also having issues with falling slats, due to the fact the the metal X braces don't stay in place. We have them placed as slatmaster has his, but the tiny little screws are not long enough to keep the metal bars in place. They slip off the screw on occasion. Do you think getting a longer screw of the same size with a nut to place on the end would work to fix it, basically sandwiching the metal slats in place?

  29. Jennah Says:

I have one of these beds size (king or queen) I bought used from graigslist and I have been using it for almost a year by now , never had a problem…my kids jump on it all the time ,my kids also have 2 ikea bed(one bought used and the other new)no problem also .I guess the problem is not with the bed but as someone said with the instruction on how to attach it ,my hubby did it attached ours(or re-attached it to be precise as it was used)and there were no instruction so we just went ahead and bough the cheapest bed slats from Ikea ,and we didnt have the original wood parts(?)that go in the 4 holes at each end of the bed frame to hold the slats in their place so we got 4 from IKEA(they give them for free),and that is it ,just make sure you secure the slats by butting the small wood part in the hole (at the end of each side of the frame)and make sure that it is between the last slat and the one before the last.I know I might not make lot of sense ,I wish I knew a better way to describe it .

  30. Jennah Says:

here are 3 photos to show where to put the plastic securing nails(at the end of the frame one in each hole of the 4 holes at the end of the bed frame),and then how we put the metal x frame(don't put them as X ,put them in the middle of the bed one beside the other 11).hope that helps .ours was used and now it is not just used but abused with my kids jumping on it all the time ,no problem whatsoever,so maybe that will works for u guys too.

  31. Gary Thomas. Edinburgh Says:

We had the same problem with the Aspelund bed.

The slat were always falling of the frame and we ended up sleeping on the floor.

We purchases a piece of wood 2 metres long by 8" x 1" thick,
6 bolts and nuts and washers.

We drilled holes in the wood to match the hole already in the central metal support.Using electric drill
We then attached the wood to the central metal support using bolts, washers, and nuts.
The wood now lays on top of the central metal support.

We also attached the slats to the bed by using screws similar to the original stops on the metal frame.

The bed is now more secure and comfortable. The slats no longer move, but we check every morninG (SAD)

We have a bed now and the slats no longer move when i sneeze!

The wood was £5, bolts, screws and washers £5. and the job took 1 hour to complete.

    Good LUCK FOLKS

    Gary

I have the LEVSKIN bed from Ikea, it looks similar to the Aspelund design with the slats and all. I dont generally have a problem with the slats falling through, sometimes the ones on the end come out of place, but my mattress has never fallen through. I do however have a tough time getting any sleep on this thing. I just find the bed too firm and too uncomfortable. I was also wondering if having a boxspring underneath the mattress would fix the problem. But it a appears that the bed would be really high if there was a boxspring and a mattress. I'm having really bad problems getting sleep on this bed because I cannot get comfortable. It is a real princess and the pea problem with me too. I think the bed is just too firm and does not relax my body at all. Anybody else have this problem?

  33. Kelv Says:

I bought the Aspelund bed less than a week ago and fell through last night on the thing. I'm really upset but will try changing the metal bars around to make the X and see if that works. I do think that having a boxspring underneath would make the bed too high (unless that's what you like). My advice to make the mattress more comfortable would be to buy a memory foam topper. That's what I have and it worked wonders (until I fell through). They sell the 2" topper at Walmart for less than $50 for a full size topper. Good luck to everyone!

  34. Ashley Says:

I have also had this exact problem (slats falling through on the Aspelund bed).
To make matters worse, it has taken Ikea over 6 weeks to begin resolve the problem. They still refuse to admit there is a problem with the design of the bed at all!?! VERY frustrating!!!

  35. Sanjay Says:

    Hello,

I purchased an Anes King size bed less than a year ago. I purchased the top-of-the-line curved slats to go along with it. Four slats from side end fell off. I went to the IKEA store in Baltimore. Even before I discussed the problem, their attitude was that it was my fault. They told me that I had not put the pegs. When I went back I found that there is no provision to put pegs for these slats. I tied the two pairs of slats together with duct tape. That did not help, and the slats fell off again.
So, I became more curious as to what was happening. I discovered that the wooden side beams were bent (the convace end pointing outwards). Therefore, the slats have been falling out.

The sad part is that IKEA is adamant that 1) they have no compalints that slats have been falling off, 2) there is only a 45 daty return policy, and 3) it must have been my fault as to why the slats fall off.

This is defintely the last piece of IKEA furniture I will be purchasing. I hope that others in the future will search this thread and post more issues so that at the least their issue will be resolved.

Hi everyone… I had a queen Malm bed from 2007 (i am not sure if it is an older or newer model cuz I just learned about two different models now). I was planning to fix my bed to support better, but I just gave away today due to moving out of the state.

Anyway, the bed frame was excellent. I love it very much and I am not gonna lie, I didn't take care of my bed very carefully. LOL but it handled it very well. The beam was the only problem, cuz it got bent. I do not know why it bent, because I was just sleeping on a right side and then it just bent on its own.

Now, I really want to buy another Malm bed once I get into my new home, but I do not want to use the same support - just slats and beam. I want to use a regular bed rail, the one with a middle beam all ready (with legs cut off and adjust to fit) and place it on the interior shelves (i do not know what these are called) and put the slats on like normally. So, I think this way may work much better.

  37. Aleksi Says:

    Hey folks!

I've had problems with my Malm bed for over a year now and had learned to live with it, until I accidentaly bumped into this site.

Turns out I had understood wrong the whole idea of the X-frame. Its function is to pull the sides of the bed together, not hold the weight of the person sleeping.

Great great thanks to everyone here, you guys really made my life a lot better.

    Best wishes from Berlin,

Hey Slatmaster, i've had the Aspelund double bed for a few months now, and the slats falling through has been a pain in the arse. Always at the most innapropriate of times, my girlfriend finds it hilarious. I can't say that I find it funny at all.

I will try reattaching the x frame across the bed rather than in the corners (where IKEA suggest) and hopefully this will resolve the problem. Thanks in advance for hopefully improving our sleep and sex life.

  39. sheryl Says:

Each end of the apselund bed (next to the middle pole bit)have the holes to attach the bars and i cant see any holes to make it into an x in the middle please help

  40. Paul Says:

I bought the Aspalund and it looks fantastic. I got a memory foam mattress to go with it too which is lovely.

But the slat problem is driving me insane! I am thinking of throwing the whole thing in the bin already and buying a better bed.

This weekend I am going to try and put some dowel rods down the sides of the metal frame to give the slats less room to move about. I'm also going to follow advice and turn them over so they curve upwards.

My girlfriend is on holiday now but I know she will go mental when she gets back next week and the slats keep falling down.

One thing for sure though, I will never buy an IKEA bed again. I am only persevering with this as I have just spent £1000 on stuff for my new flat and I can't bear to spend a penny more.

  41. Mark Says:

I had exactly the same problem - from the 4th day on the slats were no longer in place (they would simply collapse) and I would wake up on the floor… forget it about shaggin on this bed…
    I implemented two methods:
    1. Suggested by 'slatmaster' above (reattaching the frame)
    2. Just to make sure it doesn't collapse again - I used some string to tide the side metal rails up to the middle one.
    Works perfectly fine.

  42. Jennifer Says:

We have a Hemnes queen size bed and I can say that I've never had any problems whatsoever. We didn't buy the mattress from IKEA (they seem too thin to me), but the slats on the bed have withstood all of the fun we can seem to put them through. Maybe it's the Aspelund beds in particular?

  43. DC Says:

I have had the Apselund bed for one year and have moved once during that time. I had no problems with the bed for about the first 6 months, but after that, it was all downhill. 8 months after I bought the bed, the slats started falling through at least once a week, and it became progressively worse. It is now at a point where the side frame of the bed is bowed out, making it impossible for the slats to be put into place. This means that despite having a bed that is less than one year old, I now sleep on my futon, which is approximately 9 years old, because a queen-sized Apselund is not well-built enough to hold my 125 pound self. After reading the other entries, it appears that the Apselund design was flawed, and that Ikea refuses to acknowledge the problem. Given such poor quality and customer service, I will never buy a bed from Ikea again!

  44. Rebecca Says:

We had slats break first, replaced them… then the metal middle supporting strip ripped out of the end leaving gaping holes making it pretty near impossible to screw it back in. All because of simply sitting on the end of the bed. We did a quick fix, it lasted a week or two then has broken again.
    Anyone else had this problem?
The bed is about 8mths old. Queen Aspelund. I will be calling Ikea tomorrow.

  45. Tamara Says:

Thank you to whoever suggested duct tape. Since I put it on the slats have stayed and it seems to be working *touch wood*

  46. Dr. Chris Says:

Bought an Apselund bed and Hasselback (sp?) mattress…having the same problem. The mattress is great, but the slats (Sultan Lillaker) keeps falling through (only in the middle sections)…you get what you pay for, I guess.

  47. Tania Says:

Just bought the Malm twin bed for my daughter and the slats (Sultan Lillaker) keep falling through in the middle section too, I am going to buy a thick piece of plywood then put the slats over the plywood for added support since the slats are curved. Has anyone done this? Also, I was thinking that her foam mattress was too heavy but that doesn't seem to be the case since everyone here from all walks of life are having the same issues… I am so aggrevated because I had to CONVINCE my husband to let me buy this for my daughter so I would not have to worry about the wear and tear that kids put on high end furniture and he was right.. it's junk! Every piece that I got, the Malm dresser, the Expedit TV wall unit, had tiny knicks showing wear around the edges. Ikea needs to step it up.. at least a little!

  48. Frustrated in Virginia Says:

Do you need slats and a box springs? Can you just have: bed, boxsprings, and matress

  49. Me Says:

I had the falling through problem. That cross frame thing solves it. I didn't see the point when I built it but it's really important. Was funny though

  50. Stephanie Says:

So relieved to find this site as the falling slats have been driving me crazy. I have the Hemnes bed (140 x 200) double I think, and new boyf just offered to buy me a new bed out of sheer frustration! So horrible for bed to give way and collapse while you're in it. I'm really liking the plywood idea and may also try putting the X metal frames in the middle of bed too. Anyone know where I can buy plywood cheaply in London, England?

  51. Melissa Says:

I bought the Aspelund bed in Jan 08. It was fine for about 4 months and then me and my boyfriend started falling through it on a very regular basis! SO ANNOYING!. Now we have finally fixed it and I'm so sure of it that I regularly jump on it! yay!

What we did was basically not move the metal under bars (which on ours go from the ends of the underneath beam to the outside middle of the edge of the bed) but actually push in the sides of the beds and tighten these flimsy little metal poles as tight as they will go. When you think they can't go any tighter, push again and get them in a bit more! This has the effect of pulling in the splaying sides of the beds making the frame that bit smaller so that the slats won't fall through. In fact ours pulled in about an inch on each one; so much so that when we came to lay the slats back down, we could hardly get them down. Very different to when they were just falling through.

Try this. It's easy. Costs nothing. And works a treat!

Happy Aspelund fixing everybody - what a crappy bed!

  52. April Says:

Well, I have a new bed, new problem but same outcome. My husband and I purchased a Hopen King sized bed in Jan. 07 and have been frustrated ever since. Our slats never slipped but 2 of them have broken. However our problem is with the side boards. Our left side board broke in half and Ikea was "kind enough" to give us a replacement piece. The box included 2 side boards which also broke in half.We keep having the same problem with exactly the same piece. After speaking to customer service and taking their advice we took the bed apart and brought it into ikea for a quality test. Ofcourse the Ikea we brought it into didnt offer this service to us b/c we didnt have our receipt and suggested that we go to the Ikea we purchased it from which is an hr away.
The bed seems to be defective and Ikea is of no help. "no reciept" and "past 90 days", your out of a bed.
What a waste of money! We did so much of our shopping in Ikea while we were getting married and this is the way they treat their customers!!!! My advice to anyone that is buying a bed is DO NOT GO TO IKEA!!!! No problems with other pieces but their beds r horrible. Chip in a couple of more bucks, it will save you the frustration and money in the long run

  53. Sam Says:

I bought the Aspelund bed in May 08 , have a same problem it was fine for about 2 weeks. Later the slats started falling off , i initially thought it might be because the slats are not fixed and they were the cheap once. Tried screwing the metal under bars to the frames did not fix the problem, then bought the SULTAN LILLÅKERl now one side of it remains intact the other end falls down. My wife is totally annoyed with the bed falling down several times in the middle of the night. Since i was the one who pushed to buy the IKEA product, i need to fix it or return it, unfortunately i through the packaging box but its still under 90 days. IKEAS return policy is to return stuff in the original packaging. Did any of you guys on this blog could actually return the bed frame with a similar situation like mine ?

A lesson learnt not to buy any bedding stuff from IKEA.

  54. bas Says:

I found this with googling because I didn't know what box springs are.
Ok I guess it's a box with springs inside, that you guys use to put the matress on top. Now ikea is europe and europeans use wooden curved slats to make the matress softer. If they are curved. There are 3 variants at ikea:

    A) Just straight wooden slats connected with some tape or similiar thing: They are just there to support the weight and won't buldge an inch. Make sure to fix the ends so they can't move. They serve no other function, all work is done by the matress (which needs to softness and thickness to do it then.)

    B) Curved wooden slats connected with some tape or similiar thing: They are meant to be springs that give in and make the matress softer or give space where you need it (like the hip region). They need to be placed like an inverted U, i.e. the middle is higher than the ends, so the weight has to press them down. If you do it the other way, they will fall down. Also fix the end. Allows for thinner matress since part of the work will be done by the springy wood.

    C) Curved wooden slats preassembled in a frame, usually you can move some up or down to make it easier to sit in (also with motor support) and you can also sometimes adjust the "springiness" of the slats. Since it is in a frame, you can't do anything wrong just remember, middle is the high part. Same rules for matress as above.

Put a matress protector on the slats and then the matress on top and if you still need more softness a matress cushion (up to 4 extra inches).

I bought the Aspelund bed and the Lillaker slats and it started collapsing on the 2nd night. So frustrating! Thanks to this site and others complaining of the same issue, I think we've fixed it (no thanks to the useless support people at IKEA!). There was no way to make the x shape with the crossrails on the Aspelund famre, but as Melissa suggested above, we eahc pushed as hard as we could on one side of the bed, pushing the crossrails in until we saw a new, tighter hole for the screw and tightened the rails up a lot. Now the slats fit in super tight and don't slip at all! I just hope it doesn't loosen up over time. I am totally keeping my receipt just in case!

Has anyone had problems with the aspelund when using a box spring?

My daughter has owned an IKEA Hensvik bed for a year, she has jumped on it, etc. and it remains sturdy and pretty looking. She never had a problem with bedslats falling off at all. Perhaps there are only problems with particular models of IKEA beds???
