Moving to WordPress

TypePad is just blech. I'm annoyed at the lack of customizable features. I'm annoyed that I've had to manually ping Technorati after posts to be indexed [I just received an email stating that SixApart -parent company- has just enabled this on the backend]. I'm annoyed that I can't search my own damn blog via a dinky search box that indexes my own blog. I'm annoyed that I can't click from within a post and edit it or a comment on it. Instead, I have to fish through the TypPad admin UI and do it. I'm annoyed that there are so many cool things available in WordPress that aren't being rolled out in TypePad.

So, I'm moving to WordPress. I've already established a new blog and I'm fiddling with it right now. This TypePad account doesn't expire until sometime in the summer, but it'll serve as a redirect point [via links all over the place] to the new blog home.

I've loved tinkering with the functionality of WordPress on Messy and Picky [which is due for an upgrade from v1.5.2 to v2.0.2] and I've loved tinkering with the new site. Initial feedback from a few WordPress users and other people has been constructive and generally in the good column.

I think it'll be in a state ready to be fully public by the end of the week. A new link will be revealed.

Permalinks will die over the summer at some point. Links pointing within the blog to earlier entries will break too. Casualties in this upgrade I'm willing to make.

I'm moving my wife's blog from Blosxom to WordPress. It's going smoothly and should be done this weekend. I'd like to give you some tips and warnings, but so far everything Just Worked(TM).

you would think they would have a feature to move between typepad, movable type and wordpress since the same company owns all of them. Have fun designing the new blog!

  4. Jatin Says:

oops sorry they only own live journal, movable type and typepad. But, still should be easier to move your blog than it is now

  5. Scott Says:

    Congrats on the move, Albert!

Jatin, it is fairly easy to move from one to another, but you're right, it could be easier.

Congrats on the move, Albert. I see a mass exodus from TypePad happening.

I swear by Wordpress. It is extremely easy to use, and the ridiculous amount of plugins and hacks out there make it more customizable (is that a word?) than anything else I've seen.

i moved my blog from BLOGGER over to WORDPRESS & it's amazing amount of features, just as you did. also, BLOGGER made you republish the WHOLE friggin' entire blog if you want your template changes to take affect in the archive pages. yeah, some blood was lost with the transfer and the permalinks/post titles…but it's totally worth it being on WORDPRESS! welcome to the club, dragonballyee!

Good luck with WordPress. I have been using it since I started my blog. I have nothign to compare it to, but it was pretty easy to setup up and is easy enough to use. I still don't underatnd how to customize certain things, but then again, I have done pretty well without every looking at hte documentation. I see you are using Spam Karma. I installed it about two weeks agao and have found it veyy helpful.

Maybe after the election and my semester ends I will fool with it some more.

The place looks good, Albert. Is that a picture of something in Philly or elsewhere?
