Drinking Liberally 6p

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

If it's Tuesday, it's Drinking Liberally

So not only is it Tuesday and time for Drinking Liberally at Tangier [1801 Lombard St], it's State of the Union day! Woo hoo! Watch W stumble [almost drunkenly] through the English language for about forty-five minutes. Better yet, watch it with us. We'll be drinking. A lot. And our fearless organizer Peter sent out a note informing us of a drinking game for the occassion.

But Atrios won't be in the house. He'll be on Air America Radio's The Majority Report with Sam Seder going all Mystery Science Theater 3000 on W.

As always, $1 off drink specials from 6p - 9p and free buffalo wings to whomever can grab them faster than I can!

Ignorant Racists

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

I don't know what's worse. A racist who is consciously aware of what they're saying or a person too ignorant to know what they're saying is racist.

An absolutely racist phrase I come across often is "Where are you from?" Asked as the first couple of things exchanged in a conversation. I was just asked that question in the elevator not fifteen minutes ago by an in his fifties white man carrying a brown bag that looked like his lunch. I was holding a box of crap, running errands between offices and just made the elevator. He asked "Which floor" and I replied "Three please" and the next words out of his mouth were: "Where are you from?" And I just wanted to kick is fucking teeth in.

"New York" I replied [which is what I always say in this situation]. He nodded and asked "So, are you Chinese?" "No." "Mongolian?" "No." "Korean?" "Yes." And then we got to the second floor, he stepped off mumbling something to himself.

Fuckwad.

For anyone out there who asks this question to anyone else, just shut the fuck up. Because you may get me and I may be in a pissed off mood because his Democratic party is full of a bunch of spineless fucks or some other perfectly vaild reason to be in a pissed off mood. You may get your teeth kicked in from what you may think was an innocent question. It's not. Why? Because I said so.

Coalition for Voting Integrity

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

eRobin over at Factesque is working her ass off in the 'burbs of Philly rounding up support for the Fitzpatrick Amendent [as in Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-08)] with a nonpartisan group she belongs to called the Coalition for Voter Integrity. The work she/they is/are doing has to do with the Help America Vote Act [HAVA].

During the meetings with Fitzpatrick and his staff one thing became abundantly clear to me: if this bill is going to pass in time to make a difference, it will only be because enough citizens from around the country call their Congressional reps in the Senate and the House to say that they want it to be law. We need you to pick up the phone again today and call your Senators and your Reps and tell them that Fitzpatrick's bill to extend the HAVA deadline past the primary must pass immediately. I don't have a number for it yet, but when I do, I'll post it. It's possible that the aide won't know what you're talking about. That's okay. This is all happening very fast. If you mention HAVA and Fitzpatrick, they'll get the message.

Also important: The Coalition for Voting Integrity needs funds to keep doing the phenomenal work that is has been doing over the last eight months. In addition to the Fitzpatrick bill and some other legislation that is still under consideration, we have also sued the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania over inconsistent certification standards. This is a groundbreaking lawsuit that will have national implications - none other than defender of the vote, Ion Sancho, supports it. But we need funds to keep it going. Please make a donation to CVI here. (Funny story: I've been telling the other women in CVI how powerful the netroots are. We had a real-life fundraiser that didn't do too well and I was placed in the role of Mary Netroots Sunshine telling them all how my guys would come through for us. So it's my butt on the line here too. My butt and our democracy! Save whichever means more to you.)

Lend eRobin a hand, spread the word.

What's That Dog Chomping On?

One of my favorite and most visited photoblogs is Slower.net. A photoblog by Elliot Shepard, a NYC based photog. Not only are the photos awesome, the design of the site is pretty sweet. It was the first photoblog I can recall seeing with a transparent half-image-sized box where you click on one half to go backwards and the other half to go forwards. Little arrows pop up to help you see where in the image you have to be to click. The collapsable comments are awesome and so are the embedded tags.

I've been frequenting this photoblog for over a year now I think and this shot may just be my favorite of all.

For the g33ks, Shepard lists the software that goes into the site at the bottom of the about page.

A Beautiful Spring Day

Monday, January 30th, 2006

It was gorgeous outside today! It still is! I just walked outside to grab a breath of fresh West Philly air. But there's one problem. IT'S JANUARY 30TH.

The UK Government has a looksie and I'm sure the British have a funny [to my American ears] saying for it, but I don't know it.

Neighborhood Networks Candidate Forum January 2006

first
baptist church
For those who have never heard of the First Baptist Church, this is
what it looks like looking from the west side of 17th St. It's quite a gorgeous church from the
outside. I've passed by it many times, but this was my first time inside the great church.

first
baptist church
This is a view of the inside of the church from the second deck, I
forget what this is called in church-speak. I realized while walkind around this gorgeous piece or architecture that it was my first time inside a church since moving to Philly over a year and a half ago. Peep that bajillion pipe organ. I have no idea if it is still functional.

But I wasn't there for a tour, I was there to take photos of the Neighborhood Networks -
African American Coalition Candidate Forum with Chuck Pennacchio [the guy I'm volunteering for] and Alan Sandals. Liz already posted on the Pennacchio Blog, but here's my round up of the happenings of Saturday's forum. It was a good turnout. I'd say between 100-150 people showed up on the gorgeous Saturday afternoon. Young and old, political veterans and newbies who were energized by this particular Senate race.

organizers and candidates
[L to R] Marc Stier [NN], Vivienne Crawford [AAC/NN], Sandals, Pennacchio, Tracey Gordon [AAC], Gloria Gilman [NN].

Before the candidate forum began, Tracey Gordon of the African American Coalition gave a rousing speech on why the AAC was becoming involved in projects with NN. She's pictured here speaking of her group's action in clearing the Philly streets of the advertisement of 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin' which showed 50 holding a gun in his left hand and a mic in the right. The group successfully got Clear Channel to take down the billboards depicting the violent message.

john
featherman
And pretty Liberal Republican candidate John Featherman was in the house too. He as
also at the League of Women Voters debate in Harrisburg last week. He was schmoozing with the crowd and stayed afterwards to talk to people as well.

The forum part was moderated by Ms. Crawford. It consisted of five questions which were given to the candidates all of about twenty minutes before the debate was to begin. She noted that neither candidate had any problems about this and that she was very pleased with that, no stuffy pre-meditated answers here. It was going to be off the cuff. The questions:

 1. What improvements to the quality of life in Philadelphia would you seek to make through Senate action?
 2. What do you think are the most pressing issues facing our nation today that the Senate should address?
 3. What policies would you seek Senate action to address the survival of life on our planet?
 4. Describe the role of the Senate in ensuring the balance of power in our government structure and what you would do about this issue at thsi time?
 5. Why should we elect you instead of other candidates?

Each candidate would have [I think] three minutes to respond. After the questions, the floor would be open to questions from the audience. I wanted to follow the answers more closely, but I was there to ake photos and didn't want to put down the camera to take notes.

chuck
pennacchio
Chuck Pennacchio brought his kids to the event, Ben and Sophie. I think
they're nine and seven. They were both interested in my camera gear. Pretty well behaved too if you ask me. They were unsupervised for the most part of the three or so hours there. Chuck spoke in his usual firey manner getting the crowd to yelp and clap some thunderous applause at some point during each of his responses to the questions.

alan
sandals
Alan Sandals was his usual self as well, subdued and not so firey. Not to say that his responses weren't thoughtful, they were and he always has been when I've spoken with him, but just that he lacks that oomph needed to carry a crowd.

alan and
chuck at the table
Here are Alan and Chuck sitting at the table in front of the massive organ pipes. Taken with the wide-angle 12-24mm Tokina.

I think the strongest point that Pennacchio made during the debate was that he already had a great grassroots network formed across the state consisting of 5000 volunteers. He's been working hard for the past year and a half forming this network of contacs throughout the state and that went over very well with this very grassroots oriented crowd. Sandals countered by stating that he already had television commercials on air and that going out to meet activists on the ground was an old-fashioned tactic. Me, I like meeting candidates and it has invigorated my political fire within. Meeting candidates on an almost weekly basis at the Center City chapter of Drinking Liberally [which Chuck and Alan have frequented] is quite an amazing experience. You can really corner a candidate and grill her/him about what they stand for. They can't escape and you're there one on one, pretty empowering.

candidates clapping
After the candidates had their say they joined in a round of applause of the audience who had given up their Saturday to hear what their candidates had to say. After a few questions from the audience, the group broke for a yummy lunch downstairs where we sat by neighborhood and brainstormed a bit about the forum and beyond, but that's another post.

And a note on the photos: all taken by me and not for reproduction elsewhere without the express
consent of me. The first four shots and the one of the candidates in front of the pipes were taken
with my Tokina 12-24mm f/4 and all the others were taken with my Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8ED. Wanna
use them? Get at me.

Exxon-Mobil: $10.13B PROFIT

Monday, January 30th, 2006

exxon $10.13B Q4 2005
So, I just saw this AP story [via WaPo] on how Exxon-Mobil just broke last quarter's record-setting profit margin. In Q3 2005, they made $9.92B on the back of the hurricanes that hit the Gulf Coast region. Jacking gas prices and claiming they just had to do so to survive as a company. Greedy fuckwads.

Well, I don't know how they did it again, but they made a $10.13B profit in Q4 2005. A solid $210M increase, nearly a QUARTER OF A BILLION DOLLAR increase in profit.

Stock prices rose $1.79 with the news.

Randi Rhodes on Larry King

Monday, January 30th, 2006

Randi Rhodes, probably my single favorite radio personality ever, will be on Larry King tonight at 9p. So Larry will actually be talking some politics, sweet. His shoulder-y body will continue to freak the shit out of me. He's all shoulders!

For anyone not familiar with Randi, she's a talk radio vetran now on Air America Radio, the almost two year old Progressive radio network which is currently on eighty-seven stations plus XM Satellite radio. She anchors the network with her 3p - 7p show. She rocks my world.

Adrian's of South Philly

Sunday, January 29th, 2006

adrian's by kate atkins
I got a cool little peek into the Rocky film being made here in Philly early this morning. A reader of this blog [cool!] sent me the above photo with a little background:

I took a walkabout today south of Washington/East area, and popped into Ippolito's for some fish. Walked out, and thought, is there a new restaurant in Victor's? But no, it was just Rocky movie action.

The place has a temporary new awning and sign that reads "Adrian's" - suspicious, yes? So I ask the dude in the street, yo, did they do that for the movie? He says, yeah man. I'm like, hey that's cool, do you mind if I snap a photo? He's like, yeah sure go for it.

Thank you Kate for the heads up and for the cool story and accompanying shot!
